Moritz Senft-Raiß studied comparative literature and political science at the LMU, with stays abroad in London and Venice. His academic interests lie primarily in 19th century (German) literature, as well as literary and cultural theories of the economic and the domestic. In addition to literature, the interdisciplinary examination of opera and cinema is also relevant. He is also concerned with the communication of the humanities and high culture in journalism, new media and cultural institutions.
Thesis topic: "The house in the storm. Adalbert Stifter's literature of the family"
The doctoral project aims to trace Adalbert Stifter's family literature through a discourse-analytical reading of his texts. Out of the author's resignation regarding the failed revolution of 1848 and as a counter-reaction to the virulent "anti-genalogical experiments of modernity" (Sloterdijk), Stifter's later texts are devoted to the family and domesticity. Different, contradictory discourses can be found in them: from the dynamics of particularization described by Adam Smith to the conservative (re)constructions of the "whole house" of Wilhelm Heinrich Riehl. However, Stifter should not be misunderstood as the executor of these discourses in the field of literature. As Friedrich Kittler has shown, specific familial constellations are a precondition for understanding modern literature. The bourgeois family is constituted by specific institutional practices, dispositives and discourse networks (Aufschreibesysteme) in literature. This aspect will be examined in particular in Adalbert Stifter's texts. For the reason why Stifter's late texts are at odds with the understanding of realism and literature of his contemporaries is to be found precisely here, and thus enables not only a hitherto missing reading of Stifter's work, but also a re-evaluation of realism and literature in the 19th century.
